Visiting a new doctor’s office can feel intimidating, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve had regular medical care. At Total Family Care, we want your first visit to be comfortable, thorough, and stress-free. Here’s exactly what you can expect when you walk through our doors.

Before Your Appointment

Do I Need an Appointment?

Total Family Care operates as both a traditional primary care office and a walk-in clinic. While appointments are recommended for routine physicals and chronic disease management, we welcome walk-ins for urgent concerns. If you’re dealing with a sudden illness, need an STD test or pregnancy test, or have an urgent health concern, just walk in, there is no appointment necessary but it’s still always better to call ahead to let us know you’re coming.

What Should I Bring?

Make your first visit smoother by bringing:

  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • List of current medications (or bring the bottles)
  • Medical records from previous doctors (if available)
  • List of known allergies
  • Any recent lab work or test results
  • Questions or concerns you want to discuss

If you’re paying out-of-pocket, ask about pricing when you call or arrive as we believe in transparency and will clearly explain costs upfront.

When You Arrive

Check-In Process

Our friendly front desk staff will greet you and help you complete any necessary paperwork. We keep forms simple and straightforward. You’ll provide basic information including:

  • Personal and contact information
  • Insurance details
  • Medical history
  • Current symptoms or concerns
  • Consent forms

If you’re a walk-in patient, we’ll let you know the approximate wait time. We respect your time and work efficiently to see patients as quickly as possible.

During Your Visit

Meeting Your Doctor

Your doctor will review your medical history and discuss the reason for your visit. Whether you’re here for a routine checkup, chronic disease management, or an urgent concern, we take time to listen. Expect your doctor to:

  • Ask detailed questions about your symptoms and health history
  • Review your current medications
  • Discuss your lifestyle, including diet, exercise, sleep, and stress levels
  • Address any concerns or questions you have

Don’t hold back! This is your opportunity to discuss anything affecting your health, from physical symptoms to mental health concerns.

Physical Examination

Depending on your reason for visit, your doctor may perform:

  • Vital signs check (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight)
  • General physical examination
  • Specific exams related to your symptoms or concerns
  • Point-of-care testing (strep throat, flu, pregnancy tests, STD testing, etc.)

If lab work or diagnostic testing is needed, we’ll explain what’s required and why. Many tests can be done right here in our office for quick results and convenience.

After Your Examination

Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

Your doctor will explain their findings and discuss next steps. This might include:

  • A diagnosis and explanation in clear, understandable terms
  • Prescription medications (we’ll send them directly to your pharmacy)
  • Lifestyle recommendations or preventive measures
  • Follow-up appointments if needed
  • Referrals to specialists for complex conditions

Feel free to ask questions, we want you to leave fully understanding your health status and treatment plan.

Establishing Ongoing Care

If you’re looking for a long-term primary care home, your doctor will discuss:

  • Recommended screening tests based on your age and health
  • Schedule for routine checkups and preventive care
  • How to contact us between visits
  • Our walk-in policy for urgent concerns
